A pet age is the same calendar arithmetic as any other. What differs is what the number means: a three-year-old rabbit is middle-aged, a three-year-old parrot is barely out of adolescence, and a three-year-old hamster is exceptionally old.

How to work out a pet age

1 Enter the date of birth or adoption estimate.
2 Read the exact age.
3 Compare against the typical lifespan for the species.
4 Weeks and months are the useful units for young animals.

Lifespan varies across pets by more than two orders of magnitude, which is what makes a single "pet years" conversion meaningless. Hamsters live two to three years, rabbits eight to twelve, cats and dogs ten to eighteen depending on size, and larger parrots can outlive their owners — a macaw commonly reaches fifty and sometimes eighty. Any life-stage judgement has to start from the species, not from the number.
