Dog years are not seven to one

The seven-to-one rule is wrong in both directions. A dog’s first year is worth about fifteen human years and the second about nine, so a two-year-old dog is around 24 — not fourteen. Each year after that adds four to seven depending on size, which puts a five-year-old medium dog at about 39 rather than 35.

The curve is steep then shallow, and the multiplier that matters after year two is not age at all. It is body size, and it runs the opposite way to almost every other comparison in biology.

Why does size work backwards in dogs?

Across species, larger animals generally live longer — an elephant outlives a mouse by decades. Within dogs the relationship inverts: a Great Dane is elderly at seven while a Chihuahua of the same age is barely middle-aged.

The leading explanation is growth rate rather than size itself. Giant breeds reach adult mass extremely fast, and that rapid growth appears to carry a cost in cellular ageing and in cancer risk. It is the one place where the general mammalian pattern reverses inside a single species.

Is there a better model than a table?

There is a very different one. A 2020 study using DNA methylation — the epigenetic clock — produced the curve 16 × ln(dog age) + 31, which ages dogs extremely fast early and then almost flattens.

It puts a one-year-old dog at about 31 human years and an eight-year-old at about 64, which is far steeper at the start than the conventional table and gentler later. It also has no size term at all, which is its main weakness given how strongly size predicts lifespan.

Neither model is authoritative. The table is a rule of thumb fitted to observed lifespans; the logarithm is fitted to a molecular marker in a single breed. They agree on the shape — fast then slow — and disagree on the numbers.

What about cats?

The same shape and a narrower spread. A cat’s first year counts for about fifteen human years and the second for nine, putting a two-year-old at 24; each year after adds roughly four, so a seven-year-old cat is about 44.

Cats vary far less by size than dogs do, so a single curve works better. What matters more in practice is the life stage: veterinary guidance treats cats as kittens to six months, junior to two years, adult to six, mature to ten, senior to fourteen and geriatric beyond that.

Those stages drive the actual decisions — screening frequency, diet, dental checks — in a way a human-equivalent number never does.

How is an unknown age estimated?

From teeth, mostly, and it is far more reliable in the young than the old. Puppies have a predictable dental timeline that gives an age to within a few weeks; adult dogs are estimated from wear and tartar, which depends heavily on diet and chewing habits and is much vaguer.

Cats are harder again. Teeth give a reasonable guide only in kittens; in adults, eye clarity, coat condition and muscle tone give a range rather than a number, and a rescue estimate of "three to five" is an honest one rather than a hedge.

Why is a single pet-years figure meaningless?

Because lifespan across pets varies by more than two orders of magnitude. Hamsters live two to three years, rabbits eight to twelve, cats and dogs into their teens, and some parrots outlive their owners.

A three-year-old rabbit is middle-aged, a three-year-old parrot is barely out of adolescence, and a three-year-old hamster is exceptionally old. There is no conversion factor that spans that, which is why the useful question is what life stage the animal is in rather than what number it maps to.

What does the curve mean in practice?

It changes when screening starts rather than what the number is. A giant breed reaching senior status at seven means bloodwork, joint assessment and weight management move forward by years relative to a small breed of the same age.

The other practical consequence is expectation. Owners of large breeds consistently underestimate how quickly the middle years pass, because the dog looks unchanged through a period in which its human equivalent has aged two decades.

Questions people ask

Where did seven-to-one come from? No identifiable source. It appears to be a rough division of a human lifespan by a dog lifespan, popularised because it is easy to remember and roughly right in the middle of a dog’s life.

Does neutering affect lifespan? The evidence suggests it does, in both directions depending on species, sex and timing. It is a veterinary conversation rather than an arithmetic one.

Is a mixed-breed dog easier to place on the curve? Use adult body weight rather than breed. Weight is what the size bands are actually keyed on, and it is knowable where ancestry often is not.

At what age is a dog senior? Roughly seven for large breeds and ten or more for small ones — which is the same size effect expressed in a threshold rather than a multiplier.
