Instagram caption length checker

Instagram allows 2,200 characters and truncates at about 125. It also caps hashtags at 30, counted across the caption and the first comment together.

The 125-character fold means an opening line is the whole caption for most of your audience, so a greeting spends the visible portion on nothing. Hashtags placed at the top consume it entirely, which is the argument for putting them at the end or in the first comment — though the widely repeated claim that comment hashtags perform better than caption ones has never been demonstrated, and Instagram has said they are treated the same. Line breaks count as characters and are stripped unless each blank line carries an invisible character, which is a separate problem the line break generator solves.
