The count updates on every keystroke, both with and without spaces, alongside the limits people usually need it for. Nothing is sent anywhere — the counting happens in the page.

How to count characters

1 Paste or type your text. Every number updates immediately.
2 Check the limit bars if you are writing to a specific length.
3 Copy the whole report if you need the figures elsewhere.

Which count you want depends entirely on who is asking. Most social platforms and SMS count characters including spaces; academic and publishing limits are more often "characters excluding spaces", which is roughly a sixth lower for ordinary prose. There is a subtler trap with anything non-Latin: this counts what a person would call characters, so an emoji is one, but many systems count the underlying code units instead and see two or more. If a field rejects text this tool says is short enough, that mismatch is almost always the reason.

Questions

It shows both. Social and SMS limits normally include spaces; academic word limits often exclude them.
