A standard year holds about 260 weekdays, or roughly 250 after typical public holidays — around 1,880 hours at 7.5 hours a day. A month averages 21 to 22 working days, which is the figure most capacity planning runs on.

How to count working days

1 Enter the period.
2 Deduct the public holidays that apply where you are.
3 Set your working day length — 7.5 and 8 hours are both common.
4 Read days and hours together for capacity planning.

Available capacity is always well below the raw working-day count. Subtract annual leave, public holidays, sickness and training and a nominal 260-day year becomes nearer 200 days of actual availability per person. Planning against the calendar figure rather than the available figure is the most common reason project estimates slip without anyone doing anything wrong.
