Sales tax calculator
Rates vary by state, county and city, and combined rates in the same state can differ by several points. Some goods are exempt or taxed at a reduced rate. Check the rate for the exact address of the sale.
Sales tax is the price multiplied by the rate. A $100 item at 7% costs $107. Working backwards, divide the total by 1.07 rather than subtracting 7%, which would give $99.51 and be wrong.
How to calculate sales tax
Combined rates are what actually apply, and they are rarely the state rate alone. A state at 6.25% can have counties and cities adding two or three points on top, so the rate at one address differs from the rate a few miles away. Sourcing rules add another layer: most states tax based on where the buyer takes delivery rather than where the seller sits, which is why online sellers deal with thousands of rate combinations rather than fifty.
Questions
Multiply the price by the rate as a decimal. A $50 item at 8.25% adds $4.13, for $54.13.
