Sale price is the full price multiplied by one minus the discount. A 25% reduction on 79.99 gives 59.99 — which is also why so many sale prices land just under a round number rather than exactly on one.

How to set a sale price

1 Enter the full price and the discount you want to advertise.
2 Add a second markdown if the item is going into a deeper reduction.
3 Check the effective discount if you are stacking.
4 Round to a psychological price point rather than leaving an awkward figure.

Setting a markdown is a margin decision disguised as a marketing one. A 25% discount on a product carrying a 40% margin does not remove a quarter of the profit — it removes most of it, because the discount comes entirely out of the margin rather than out of the cost. Working the sale price out first and then checking what margin survives is the order that keeps a promotion from being a loss. The margin calculator alongside does that half.

Questions

Multiply the full price by (100 − discount) ÷ 100. A 25% cut on 79.99 gives 59.99.
