Etsy charges a listing fee per item, a transaction fee on the total including shipping, and payment processing on top. On a 35 item with 4.50 shipping, fees come to about 3.07 and you keep 36.43 before materials and postage.

How to work out Etsy fees

1 Enter the item price and shipping charged.
2 Add your material and labour cost, and what postage really costs.
3 Use your own fee percentages — they differ by country.
4 Check the margin, and whether it pays you properly for your time.

The cost most Etsy sellers under-count is their own labour. A handmade item that takes ninety minutes and returns twelve pounds of margin is paying eight pounds an hour before any allowance for admin, photography, customer messages or the listing renewal that happens every four months. Pricing that includes a real hourly rate for making time is the difference between a business and an expensive hobby, and it is the single most common reason a busy Etsy shop still loses money.
