Cropping to square always discards something, and the only question is what. This crops from the centre, which is right for most photographs and wrong for anything where the subject sits off to one side — in that case crop it yourself first and then square it here. Square is worth converting to because so many systems assume it: marketplace grids, avatars, album artwork and app icons are all square, and supplying a landscape image to any of them means letting their cropper decide, usually badly. Downscaling from a large original is free in quality terms; upscaling a small one is not, so start from the biggest copy you have.
