The Gregorian calendar repeats exactly every 400 years. Its leap rule — every fourth year, except centuries not divisible by 400 — produces 146,097 days across that span, and 146,097 divides by seven with nothing left over. So every date falls on the same weekday 400 years later: 15 June 1990 was a Friday, and 15 June 2390 will be one too.
That single coincidence is why weekday arithmetic is finite rather than open-ended, and it is what every "what day was I born" calculation ultimately rests on.
Why does a birthday move by one day most years?
Because 365 divided by seven leaves a remainder of one. A common year advances the weekday of any fixed date by one; a leap year advances it by two, because the extra day is inside the span.
The result is a 28-year pattern for most of a century — Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and around again — broken at century boundaries that skip a leap year. That break is exactly why the cycle has to be 400 years rather than 28.

What is an ordinal date?
The day of the year counted from 1 January as day 1. In a common year 31 December is day 365; in a leap year it is 366, and anything after February shifts by one between the two.
ISO 8601 calls this an ordinal date and writes it as 2026-235. It turns up in aviation, in manufacturing lot codes and in older mainframe systems, because it sorts correctly as text and needs no month lookup — the same reasons ISO date formats won everywhere else.
Which week number is it?
Depends on the convention, and there are two that disagree by up to a week. ISO 8601 runs weeks Monday to Sunday and defines week 1 as the week containing the first Thursday of the year — so early January can belong to week 52 or 53 of the previous year. 1 January 2021 fell in week 53 of 2020.
The other convention, common in North American systems, starts weeks on Sunday and calls the week containing 1 January week 1 regardless of how few days of it fall in the new year.
Two systems reporting "week 1" can therefore mean different weeks, which matters for anything reporting weekly. The fix is to state the convention alongside the number, exactly as with a time zone.
Why do fiscal years start in odd places?
Mostly historical accident, preserved because changing it is expensive. The UK tax year for individuals starts on 6 April, a legacy of the 1752 calendar switch that moved the year start and then added days to avoid short-changing the Treasury. The UK corporation tax year starts 1 April, the US federal year 1 October, and Australia 1 July.
The consequence is that the same date sits in different quarters depending on whose year you are in, which is a routine source of confusion in any cross-border report. Q1 is not a date range; it is a date range relative to a stated year start.
Retailers add another layer with 52/53-week fiscal years, which end on the same weekday annually so that like-for-like comparisons line up. One year in five or six has 53 weeks, and that year looks artificially strong in any un-adjusted comparison.
What is the useful figure for a month?
The weekday count, not the day count. Seven months have 31 days, four have 30 and February has 28 or 29 — but a 31-day month can hold 21, 22 or 23 weekdays depending on which day it starts on.
That two-day spread is larger than the difference between a 30- and a 31-day month, and it is what actually drives capacity in a month. February 2026 has 28 days and 20 weekdays, starting on a Sunday and ending on a Saturday.
