Reading a tyre sidewall, and what a size change does to your speedometer

A tyre marked 205/55 R16 is 205 mm wide, has a sidewall 55 per cent of that width — 112.75 mm — and fits a 16 inch rim. Overall diameter is the rim, 406.4 mm, plus two sidewalls, giving 631.9 mm. A replacement size should stay within about 3 per cent of that figure, or everything downstream of wheel speed starts to read wrong.

The mixed units are historical and they are not going to change. Two of the three numbers are metric and the middle one is a ratio, which is why the size cannot be read as a straight measurement.

What does each part mean?

The aspect ratio is the part that makes two tyres of the same nominal width behave differently. A 205/45 has a sidewall of 92.25 mm against 112.75 mm for a 205/55 — a shorter, stiffer sidewall that responds faster and rides harder.

Why does the speedometer care?

Because it counts wheel revolutions and multiplies by an assumed circumference. Fit a tyre with a larger diameter and each revolution covers more ground than the car thinks, so the speedometer under-reads and the odometer records fewer miles than you drove.

It is not only the speedometer. Anti-lock braking, stability control and traction control all work from wheel speed, and cruise control and any distance-based service interval do too. A 3 per cent error is tolerable; a 6 per cent one is a car whose safety systems are working from a slightly wrong model of the world.

Note that speedometers are already deliberately optimistic. European regulation forbids an indicated speed below the true one and allows up to 10 per cent plus 4 km/h above it, so a larger tyre eats into a margin that was there for a reason.

How does plus-sizing work?

By making two changes that cancel. Going from 205/55 R16 to 225/45 R17 raises the rim by an inch and lowers the sidewall to compensate, keeping the overall diameter within a millimetre or two.

That is why the aspect ratio falls as the rim grows through a manufacturer’s option list. The wheel gets bigger, the tyre gets thinner, and the car keeps the same rolling circumference — so the speedometer, the gearing and the electronics all still see what they expect.

What does change is ride and cost. A shorter sidewall transmits more of the road surface into the cabin, is more easily damaged by a pothole, and is more expensive to replace.

The load index and speed rating usually move with a size change too. A wider tyre on the same car often carries a higher load index than needed, which is harmless; a lower one is not, and it is the specification most likely to be quietly downgraded when a size is substituted for availability rather than choice.

What else is on the sidewall?

The load index and speed rating, which are the two markings a replacement must not go below. The load index is a coded figure rather than a weight, and the speed rating is a letter — both are specified for the vehicle rather than chosen for preference.

There is also a four-digit date code giving the week and year of manufacture. A tyre that has never been fitted still ages, and rubber that has sat for six years is not the same product it was when it left the factory.

What about winter and all-season sizes?

Winter tyres are frequently fitted a size narrower on a smaller rim, and that is deliberate rather than a compromise. A narrower tyre concentrates the same weight onto less contact area, which helps it cut through snow to the surface underneath instead of floating on it.

The overall diameter still has to match. A winter fitment is another plus-sizing calculation run in reverse — smaller rim, taller sidewall, same rolling circumference — and the same 3 per cent rule applies.

Questions people ask

How much size difference is acceptable? About 3 per cent in overall diameter. Beyond that the speedometer error becomes significant and the electronics are working from a bad assumption.

Do bigger wheels mean bigger tyres? Usually not in overall diameter — that is the point of plus-sizing. The tyre gets wider and shorter as the rim gets larger.

Does tyre size affect the odometer? Yes, by the same proportion as the speedometer. A 2 per cent larger tyre under-records the distance by 2 per cent, which compounds over a service interval.

Why does my speedometer read high? Partly the legal margin described above, and partly tyre wear — a worn tyre is smaller in diameter than a new one, which pushes the reading further up.

What is the load index actually in kilograms? It is a coded scale rather than a direct figure — index 91 is 615 kg per tyre, and the steps are not evenly spaced. The vehicle handbook states the minimum index, and matching or exceeding it is the requirement.
