WhatsApp compresses status images considerably more than most platforms, which is worth knowing before you spend time on fine detail — thin text and subtle gradients do not survive it well. Sending as a document rather than as an image preserves quality, but a document cannot be a status, so for status specifically the compression is unavoidable and the answer is to design boldly. The overlays are lighter than Instagram’s: roughly the top tenth and the bottom fifth, leaving more usable frame than a story or a Reel.
