How long since a wedding date, in years, months and days — and therefore which anniversary is coming.

The traditional anniversary materials are less traditional than they sound. Paper for the first and silver for the twenty-fifth go back centuries in parts of Europe, but most of the intermediate years were filled in by an American jewellers’ association in 1937 to give people something to buy every year. That is not a reason to ignore them — a shared convention is useful whatever its origin — but it does explain why the list is so oddly specific for years nobody used to mark. The genuinely old ones are the fifth, tenth, twenty-fifth, fiftieth and sixtieth, which is roughly where the cultural weight still sits.
