Generates random pastels — high lightness with modest saturation, which is the combination that reads as pastel rather than merely pale.

How to use the random pastel colour generator

1 Press generate for a fresh set, and again until one lands.
2 Switch the format if you need RGB, HSL or OKLCH rather than hex.
3 Tap any swatch to copy it, or copy the whole set at once.

Pastels are popular for backgrounds and illustration because they recede: they carry hue without competing for attention, which lets foreground elements do the work. The trap is contrast. A pastel is light by construction, so white text on one essentially never passes an accessibility check, and dark text on a pastel is the pairing that works. If you are generating pastels for a background, check the specific text colour you intend to put on them rather than assuming.

Questions

High lightness combined with reduced saturation. Lightness alone gives a tint, which reads differently.
