PNG is lossless, so a quality slider does nothing to it — the only ways to shrink a PNG are to reduce its dimensions or to convert it to a lossy format. For a photograph saved as PNG, converting to WebP or JPEG typically cuts the file by 80% or more.

How to compress a PNG

1 Drop in your PNG files.
2 Cap the longest side if they are larger than they need to be — this is the main saving for a true PNG.
3 For photographs saved as PNG, switch the format to WebP or JPEG.
4 Download individually or all at once as a ZIP.

The right question for a PNG is usually whether it should be a PNG at all. The format is lossless and was designed for graphics with flat colour and sharp edges — logos, screenshots of interfaces, diagrams, anything needing transparency. A photograph saved as PNG is typically five to ten times larger than the same image as a good JPEG, with no visible benefit. If your PNG is a photograph, the conversion is the compression.

Questions

Because PNG is lossless. Quality only applies when you switch the output format to WebP or JPEG.
